Merchant services is something that is necessary for any business or individual. I first got into the merchant services industry as a bankcard vendor. During the early part of my career I sold Verifone terminals for five years and even went on to train hundreds of ISOs sales staffs in the process of selling the terminals themselves. During my training experiences I would always wonder why these fresh salespeople and experienced sales representatives were interested in working in the merchant services industry. I knew just how tough this industry was and wondered if these new recruits knew exactly what they were getting out of it and if their rewards would be as great.

What I eventually realized for myself was that many of the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of working in this industry. After 10 years of working in the merchant bankcard industry with the last 7 years of my experience as an ISO an independent consultant I would say that there are some great advantages to entering into the merchant services industry especially as a salesperson. I hope that this can help someone interested in entering into the business as well as identify some of the disadvantages that you might experience early.


The top advantages of working in merchant services

Residual checks: residual checks are like earning an extra paycheck on the 25th of every month. If you are entering into this industry from a different one that doesn't pay residual checks, these checks can be a big breath of fresh air. When it comes to actual payment, most ISOs usually earn between 30-60 basis points on the total volume of their processing dollar. It really depends on your initial employment agreement but as you continue to build your portfolio and continue to sell you will continue to earn money. Perhaps the nicest part about this extra check is that you will continue to earn money even if you take some time off or experience a few bad sales months because your entire portfolio won't fade away quickly.

The adrenaline aspect of sales: most salespeople experience a real rush whenever they close a deal. If you're passionate about selling there is no greater rush than working in this type of industry because you can close big sales deals which can result in you earning quite a healthy profit. Getting that rush of adrenaline when you close a deal can get a bit addicting.

Developing good strategies: once you start develop great sales strategies you can almost treat your job or every sales deal you walk into like a game of chess. This can make your everyday a lot more fun and more strategic.

Flexibility: the nicest part about this industry is that you can get all of the flexibility that you need. While you do have to complete a lot of work at establishing new sales pipelines, finding good clients and actually closing deals you set your hours and you are the one calling the shots in the end.

Selling off your portfolio to earn even more money: selling off residuals can be a great way that you can earn a fantastic profit and see an additional payday for merchant services. Don't be afraid to get a quote on your portfolio and get an offer in writing to sell off part of your residual. These can be healthy profits they can help you increase that great adrenaline feeling that you get from closing a deal.


The disadvantages of working in the merchant services industry

Competition: this is an extremely saturated market and there are thousands of different salespeople who are all working to attract new clients in the same locations. Sales in this industry can get very punishing and extremely competitive and you will need to stay persistent to survive and get your portion of the earnings.

Potential to get ripped off: there is always chances in this industry to potentially get ripped off in some type of deal. Especially when you are new to the business it can be easy to take a verbal agreement as an official contract. Take some time when looking at any deal, get the right information and get any contract in writing. Remember to always do research ahead of time so that you don't end up experiencing any legal ramifications down the road. There is plenty of opportunity to earn money also plenty of opportunity to lose money with inexperience. Don't be afraid to pay for some good information and learn how this business works in the early stages to avoid the chance for getting ripped off.

Merchant attrition: sales are bound to fall off in this industry in most cases attrition from merchants falls by one to 1.5 percent every month. This means that your existing merchants will very slowly start to dwindle off especially if you aren't able to sell more and keep more. Every new merchant will require extra expense to bring in but you will need to continue expanding your business and exceed the expectations of your merchants to continue earning.

Steep learning curve: this is a sales job that generally takes at least two years to master the skills you need and get a real feel for the industry. If you start on a sales team or an agent training program you will be given roughly 30 days to complete intensive training before you start working alone in the field. It takes a long time before you start to feel comfortable and this is not an instant success industry but after several years of hard work they can start to pay off very well.
